Two china figurines escape the mantelpiece for a starry adventure.
On a wooden table stood a pretty little china Shepherdess and a cheerful china Chimney Sweep. They loved each other dearly. But nearby stood a carved wooden Satyr—'General-Clothes-Press-Inspector-Head-Superintendent-Goat-Legs'—who wanted to marry the Shepherdess! The old Chinaman nodding doll agreed. 'We must escape!' whispered the Shepherdess.
They climbed down the table leg and into the dark, sooty chimney. It was steep and scary, but the Sweep helped her up, step by step. 'Look!' he said. They reached the top and saw the whole world spread out under the stars. It was beautiful but overwhelming. 'It is too big,' cried the Shepherdess. 'I want to go home to our little table.'
So they climbed all the way back down. When they returned, they found the old Chinaman doll had fallen and broken his back! He could no longer nod his head to agree to the General's marriage proposal. The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep were safe! They stayed together on their little table, surrounded by flowers, happy for the rest of their days.
